First Japanese Muscle CarYutaka Katayama had been seeking a sports car to market ever since starting Nissan US in 1960. By the early 1970s he felt the timing was right. New U.S. safety and emission-control regulations had caused the Corvette to downsize its engine. The Austin-Healy 3000 could not even pass these standards. Katayama poured all his efforts into convincing Nissan to produce a true sports car. Using Jaguar E-type styling and adding 2 cylinders to Datsuns 4-cylinder engine the 240-Z was born. It was an immediate success selling 52658 at $3526 becoming the first collectible Japanese automobile.Japanese Executives Wanted to Name it FairladyKatayama had spent enough time in America to know that a sports car named “Fairlady was not going to attract the U.S. consumer. He and some trusted coworkers removed the “Fairlady nameplates and replaced them with 240Z badges.
