Its’ 75mm gun couldn’t penetrate their front armor. It didn’t have the range or firepower of the enemy but with its 425 horsepower engine it was faster and had a faster rate of fire. Its biggest advantage was in sheer numbers produced in 11different factories 49234 were made outnumbering the German counterparts 14 to 1. It was this numerical superiority added to the Allied control of the air that gave the United States the upper hand. In 1943 a replacement was needed for the M3/5 Stuart light tank. The M24 Chaffee with its’ twin Cadillac 110 horsepower engines arrived just in time for the Battle of the Bulge. With the same weaponry as the M4 Sherman it was quick and nimble traveling up to 35 mph. The M24 Chaffee’s finest hour occurred in Korea. They were about the only tanks available in the Pacific at the start of this conflict.
